Alright dirtbags, let's get this party started. I misspoke in my text. I did not mean Roan Mountain, I actually was thinking Max Patch. Flame Thrower, Foxkilo and I did a section just north of this last year. It was a blast and I can't wait to get back out there. Max Patch is supposed to be pretty sweet. So I am thinking April 11 - 13. This puts us just shy of a full moon which might make for some nice nights.
I was thinking we do the shuttle service again. It was a sweet deal and ended the trip in a sweet trail town.
So, what do you guys think?
Ok, so I am resisting the normal Streamline urge. more . . More . . MORE! :)
ReplyDeleteWe have some options, Fox you can see this on your maps 3 & 4. Upon first glance, I am seeing the below.
A. Start at Davenport Gap and end at Max Patch or the reverse. (16 miles)
B. Start at Davenport Gap and end at Lemon Gap or the reverse. (22 miles)
C. Start at Hot Springs and end at Max Patch or the reverse. (21 miles)
D. Start at Hot Springs and end at Walnut Mountain Shelter or the reverse. (13 miles)
And the MORE option…
D. We extend the days and hike from Davenport Gap to Hot Springs. (36 miles)
I am not going to lie, there are some ups and downs on this section. I am open to suggestions if you want to try somewhere else. I miss hiking with some of you guys but it seems I make it to hard for some to feel they can enjoy. I will say that I hiked last fall with some hardcore dudes that were 15+ our elders and other than a pimp in their step, they did awesome and are back for more.
One thing to keep in mind, this is AT season in the South. We will have company. I don't see this as a bad thing, at this point the hikers will be stoked and will probably have some great stories.
In another direction. We could do some of the Foothills Trail. That would avoid AT traffic. But there is something about the AT that calls to me, and keeps me coming back. I was however going to thru hike the Foothills trail this year, but this won't be happening due to work responsibilities and needing to conserve vacation for Topsail and later this year. So I am most definitely open to this.
ReplyDeleteI take back the rating on these hikes. Other than and up on either end the elevation changes aren't bad. We should be able to throw down some mileage.
ReplyDeleteAlright ladies, I need some feedback here. How many days can we commit, how far are you interested in, are you in?
ReplyDeleteSo far I have interest from:
Foxkilo
Flame Thrower
I'm interested. I need to get back into the swing of things. I've missed too many trips. My legs are now noodles.
ReplyDeleteAnd we are in business. It would be great to have you man.
ReplyDeleteOk, so Mr. Daedae, whatcha feeling? Thurs - Sunday? Friday - Sunday? Anyone else?
ReplyDeleteThursday night to Greenville, Friday thru Sunday on the trail works for me. I'll look at my maps tonight but dont wait for me to decide. I'm good with anything.
DeleteThat narrows down the choices to options A - D. I am stoked on this trip. One issue we had last time with the shuttle, we have to get there on time for pick up, you know what I am referring to. ;)
ReplyDeleteFinally made it, this blog is a little difficult to navigate
ReplyDeleteMax Patch into Hot Springs (21 Miles) would be my preference. Should not scare anybody off. However Walnut Mountain Shelter into Hot Springs(13 miles) would definitely be doable within the group, but probably not as satisfying. Just Sayin Hiking into a Hiking Town and the Shuttle was definitely a cool twist. That's my $.02
ReplyDeleteThat's if everybody in this blog is going to hike this hike. If not and your just "Facebook Hiking Blog Stalking" then I'm open to any of these. lol
DeleteYou make a great point. We need 100% commitments. Let's get buy in by this Sunday. I will have to reserve the shuttle and we want to make sure we get a slot.
ReplyDeleteLet me also say, Max Patch is in my future.
ReplyDeleteIf option D is on the table, the trip will only be an overnighter. That as a two nighter would be kind of a joke, imho
ReplyDeleted1: Max Patch to Kale Gap - 8 miles
ReplyDeleteD2: Kale Gap to Old Road - 5 miles or Deer Park Mtn Shelter -10 easy miles mostly down hill.
d3: either 8 into Hot Springs or 3.5
If we find water, we can stop anywhere in between. I just show springs and sites at these locations.
I'm in!
ReplyDeleteWhat's up guys?
:) You have some catching up to do :)
ReplyDeleteIt is quiet in here. Guys, I need commitments. The shuttle is per person and it is AT season. I am making reservations on Monday. You are on your own if I don't hear anything.

I do'nt know how how to start other than I forgot I have a wedding I HAVE to attend on April 12th. Dont expect to change the hiking dates on my behalf, although I would HATE to miss it.
DeleteUnfortunately we are a man down, Fox, you will be missed.
ReplyDeleteDaedae
Flame Thrower
Josh
Streamline
Jason from work, Kelly, this is the guy we hiked with on the foothills trail.
This is the final tally. Go for a walk, do some body weight squats and plan your gear.
Fox! You need to cancel that wedding. You will be missed.
DeleteThanks Man. Really HATE to miss but Sharon has turned me into a Social Butterfly lol so I gotta do what I gotta do.
DeleteI wish I could change up the weekend, but for me this is really the only option. After that weekend the commitment snowball begins. Between work, holidays and family events/vacation I don't free up again until July.
ReplyDeleteAlright. We have reservations with the shuttle service. $65.00 split between the 5 of us. We need to be there by 7:30 a.m.
ReplyDeleteI know most of you will land at my house the night before. Jason we will talk about meeting somewhere.
Have we figured out the trails yet? It looked like a few options above.
ReplyDeleteis it bad to leave a vehicle out there on the road? or is the shuttle just a preference to have so there is no backtracking to get to the vehicles (extra time)?
ReplyDeleteIs your path:
take shuttle to max patch, and hike back into Hot Springs?
L
I responded to this and it didn't take. Sorry Daedae.
ReplyDeleteAgentG is correct. We will be leaving the cars in Hot Springs and the shuttle takes us to Max Patch. I will have a map available of the trail shortly, scanned last night and the email disappeared ??
Thursday night at your house or hotel?
ReplyDeleteMy house. It isn't to far of a drive.
ReplyDeleteAnyone want to ride to Patricks house together? I can help pay for gasol :)
ReplyDeleteLink to the map . . .

Hey Flamethrower/Kelly, Daniel and I are riding together in his car most likely, he thinks it might fit 3 backpacks. I think we are leaving no later than noonish to get up to the REI in Greenville by 5pm. Let us know if you'd like to ride with us or not before Wednesday if possible. Looking forward to a good hike with everyone!
